Aether

Aether is the spiritual successor to Conner Wittman’s solo piano suite, “Elements.” While “Elements” explored the commonly known classical elements of water, air, earth, and fire, this piece is about the lesser known fifth classical element, Aether, which was used to explain everything which couldn’t be explained through the initial four elements, such as gravity.

Through the frequent style changes and constant harmonic motion, this piece captures the mysterious and mystical elements that were thought to be aether. The form of this piece is a rondo (meaning the themes appear in the order of ABACA) with an intro and outro. However the A themes only retain their contour and basic harmonic shape, acting as transitions from one style to another.

This piece draws influence from various subgenres of jazz, especially with its extended harmonies and voicings. Many of the ideas in the piece came from using idiomatic techniques of 4-mallet vibraphone, then adjusted to fit the style of the piece as a whole.
