Balance
This piece is an exploration of saxophone chamber writing. The one-word titles of this piece each reference a compositional technique used to create it.
The first movement is titled after the uneven divisions of the beat. The 7/8 time signature splits the bar into three beats of 2-2-3, occasionally switching to 3-2-2 for transitions. The second movement presents fractured parts of a whole, which are combined in the last third of the movement, resulting in a cumulative form. The slower pace allows for the saxophone ensemble to show a great variety of dynamics. The last movement concludes the piece with a form which reflects after the halfway point. Not only are the melodies reflected by being reversed when presented a second time, but they are inverted as well, so the high notes become low notes and vice versa.
